Magnitude 4.9 tremor in the Kara-Unkur valley: no damage reported

The district emergency service checked bridges, schools and the switchyard within the hour. Residents of older mudbrick houses are asked to check walls and chimneys before the heating season.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 shook the foothills of the Fergana Rim at 14:17 on Thursday. The epicentre was in the Kara-Unkur valley, a few kilometres north-east of Kyzyl-Unkur. Shaking was felt in Bazar-Korgon and lightly in Tash-Kömür.

“Our teams checked the bridges, the schools and the switchyard within the hour, and everything is in order,” said Nurlan Osmonkulov, head of the Lower Naryn District emergency service. Messages relayed through the UNMI liaison office reported no damage on the far side of the line.

Residents of older mudbrick houses are reminded to check walls and chimneys before the heating season and to report cracks to their local administration.
