Ministries and departments

The Government of the Irad Special Economic Zone has ten ministries, each headed by a minister appointed by the Governor, and two technical departments, each headed by a director. The Lieutenant Governor chairs the cabinet. The ministries of Health, Education, and Labour and Social Protection report to the Lieutenant Governor; the other ministries and the departments report to the Governor.

How the ministries were formed

Under the territorial administration the executive was organised in departments, each headed by a Secretary appointed by the Governor. In December 2006 every department became a ministry and every Secretary a minister. Executive Directive 2007/09 of 6 August 2007, “On the organisation of the administration”, kept the ministries and formed two technical departments: the Department of Infrastructure and Communications, from the former ministries of Communications and of Public Works, and the Department of Energy. Older documents and the territorial fonds of the State Archives refer to the present ministries as “the Department of…”.
